Super Husbands at Red Lobster

I was eating dinner with my family at Red Lobster last night.  We were talking and having a good time when something comes flying from the table next to us, whacks me in the leg, and lands against my foot.  I look down and it’s a large Captain America action figure. As I picked it up, I hear a little voice say “oh, no.” I turned around to see a little blond boy who looks about five or six and I can see he’s really afraid he’s not going to get his Captain America back. His parents were already telling me how sorry they were.

“That’s ok” I turned toward the kid. “Hey buddy, Looks like Steve took a fall.” I said as I got up, walked to the table, and handed the figure back to him. The little guy just sat there for a moment before leaning towards me.

“That’s his secret identity. You’re ‘sposed to call him Cap.” he whispered.  I couldn’t help but chuckle because he was so serious.

“Sorry. I guess that would be best, hu? So is Cap fighting with the Avengers or is he on his own today?”

“It’s jus’ him an Iron Man. See.” He held his Iron Man up.

“Awesome. Well either Cap is going to have to work on his landings or Iron Man is going to have to practice his catch. I hope they’ll be careful.” I said, ready to return to my own table.

“They will, cause they love each other. They’re getting married, you know.” the little boy told me.

“So they’ll be super husbands, right?” I smiled.

“Right!” the kid smiled at me. “Thanks for giving me Cap back. You’re really nice. Last time I said that I got yelled at.”

“You’re very welcome. Well, maybe they just don’t know Cap and Iron Man like we do, hu? Don’t let it get you down. Some people are just mean. Think I’ll get an invite to the wedding?” I asked him.

“Yeah!” he laughed. His parents stopped me before I could get too far and thanked me for being so nice about the whole thing. They explained that the kid’s uncle was gay and that must have been where the whole m/m marriage thing came from. I assured them that I didn’t have a problem with it.

Turns out they don’t live very far from me. The kid’s name is Cole and I now have a babysitting gig. I think it’ll be fun. I’m actually looking forward to it.
